Nearly 25,000 residences in southeastern Queensland found themselves lacking electricity on Monday morning after intense storm systems swept through the region, generating powerful gusts reaching 109km/h.

Massive Frozen Precipitation and Widespread Damage

Residents observed large ice chunks measuring up to 7 centimeters in some areas. Meteorological experts announced that different parts across the state had been impacted by significant hail.

Response teams were focused on reestablishing power throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews working to manage the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victoria's Storm Challenges

At the same time, around 1,000 energy customers in Victoria also faced power outages after the metropolitan area saw its wettest day in over 500 days.

State Emergency Services handled nearly 600 calls for help across the state, mostly for structural issues but also for collapsed vegetation and flooding.

• Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple rescue reports
• Wyndham - over 175 calls for assistance

At one point on yesterday, more than twenty-eight thousand electricity consumers in Victoria were without power.

Climate Outlook

Humid circumstances were expected to linger along much of Queensland's east this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to pull in damp air against the coast.

The following day was forecast to be the heaviest precipitation period, with continued thunderstorm potential expected across different parts of both regions.

Medical Alert

Public health experts alerted that there was an higher risk of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the northern rural areas, specifically given the existing atmospheric conditions.

This caution comes after previous incidents where comparable situations led to substantial respiratory problems in the area.
