Just as the recent storm swept through the north-west the prior day, the home side overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing three goal victory for their manager's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Losses for United

This outcome marked successive WSL defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, placing them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

Manchester United's ability to balance domestic and European football with a limited squad has been a frequently analyzed subject since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always seemed this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Sadly for the visitors, they appeared weary all game, the historic win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Skinner had tried to make changes with a handful of changes. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the exclusion of the on-form Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in opposition, have fewer fitness concerns. The City coach made one change from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her return to the lineup since recovering from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

Initial Opportunities

Hemp was at the heart of everything early on, using the space left by Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her passes were causing problems and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

Goals Galore

Ex- City player Jess Park came closest, striking the upright, but the visitors were offensively poor and failed to produce a single shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have added to their cushion when a superb Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to overcome any side who ended above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a favorable standing after nine games.
