A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also comprised leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
