The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
